KCNSC Launches Smart Factory, Boosting Production for the Nation’s Security
The Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC) has taken a major step forward in supporting America’s nuclear security mission with the launch of its fully integrated Smart Factory. After a two‑year upgrade effort started in 2024, digital tools and real‑time data systems are now active across all manufacturing and quality areas—modernizing how KCNSC produces essential components for the U.S. nuclear deterrent.
This transformation helps ensure the United States remains safe and secure in a rapidly changing world. As global threats evolve, KCNSC’s ability to deliver high‑quality products quickly and reliably is more important than ever.
Justin Talley, Senior Technical Manager, described the effort as “a significant achievement from a dedicated team working to increase factory throughput using the resources we have today.”
Real-Time Insight to Keep Production Moving
By enabling nearly 1,800 employees to instantly see the status of more than 20,000 active work orders, the Smart Factory brings a new level of speed and clarity to KCNSC’s operations. Whether it’s checking the progress of a part, understanding a schedule change, or identifying a quality concern, teams can now access the information they need within seconds.
This transparency supports KCNSC’s mission to deliver components on time and at the highest levels of quality—helping ensure the nation’s nuclear deterrent remains safe, secure, and reliable.
KCNSC also introduced more than 400 scanning kiosks across its production floor. These kiosks allow employees to track the exact location of each part as it moves through the factory. With more than 300,000 scans completed so far, this improvement saves valuable time and keeps production flowing smoothly.
“Taking a moment to scan a part can save coworkers hours,” said Technical Manager Valeri Farmer. “It ensures every piece gets where it needs to go, exactly when it needs to get there.”
A More Efficient Way to Plan Work
The Smart Factory also standardizes how daily work is assigned through a new tool called the Plan‑of‑the‑Day. Employees in select departments have already used it to complete more than 40,000 operations.
“Before this tool, each area used different methods to build a daily schedule,” said Troy Girrens, Director of Manufacturing. “Now all the information is in one place. This helps teams spend less time searching for data and more time supporting our mission.”
KCNSC will roll out this standardized approach across the entire facility in fiscal year 2026, improving responsiveness and accountability.
Built for the Future
The Smart Factory isn’t just a one‑time upgrade—it’s a foundation for continuous improvement. New capabilities already in development include:
• Tools that confirm materials and equipment are ready before work begins
• Real-time image comparison to spot potential issues early
• Analytics that highlight risks in major production timelines
• Unified tracking for gauges, chemicals, and other essential items
“We’ve seen tremendous value already, and we’re just getting started,” said Elizabeth Fossey, Vice President of Engineering. “Smart Factory gives us the real-time insight and consistent communication we need to keep improving.”
A Stronger Foundation for National Security
KCNSC’s Smart Factory transformation strengthens the production backbone of the U.S. nuclear security mission. By modernizing tools, increasing speed, and improving accuracy, the campus is better positioned to meet the urgent national security challenges of today—and tomorrow.
This achievement reflects the dedication of the KCNSC workforce and its commitment to supporting America’s deterrent with precision, reliability, and innovation.
